Live, to Live Once More

In the darkness I saw light; Clutching at it desperately, I tried to hold on; it eluded my grasp; proved elusive.
I chased it down the sidewalk; past a bubbling brook that tried to help; skipped over puddles left by a torrential downpour.
I finally caught up with you; stretched out both arms to touch it; bring it to my bosom; at the last minute; fleetingly it twisted from my outstretched desperate, grubby paws.
It's as if it taunted me; its teasing jeer disappearing around yet another corner, dark narrow pathway stretching forever.
My thighs crying out from thundering; breath harsh and choppy; a heart attack waiting to pounce; cold tears streaming down my hot face; freezing then burning.
I stopped, head between palms bowed; legs shaking; back aching; just when I thought to throw in the towel, looking up I see the light turn, staring right at me.
