Finding and staying true to my own reflection

"The theme you choose may change or simply elude you, but being your own story means you can always choose the tone."- Toni Morrison
Today, I was reminded of the need to always be myself, to be true to the person radiating from deep within my bowels. It doesn't matter if it makes you stand out like a sore thumb. It doesn't matter if you are the only one doing X or not doing X.
In no way do I make this out to be an easy feat. Oft it is far easier to just mosey along doing what is expected of you, or to wrap a cloak around the light that is shimmering within ; rather than to assume the real identity that is within. Trying to stifle the beam that is you.
Is it because your beam is too bright, not as bright, maybe even a different colour, a different pattern? It could be out of fear, maybe even out of not wanting to disappoint. Maybe you were taught not to take up much space, to be invisible and that has become your second skin. Maybe when you were your truest self, snide remarks and subtle mockery were your companions.
The adage"...everyone else is taken" is oh so true. Daily I keep trying not to get lost in the sea of the reflection of others.
